Mariners-Orioles to be First Carbon-Neutral Game in MLB

In Seattle, Noel Lyn Smith reports that the Mariners “are celebrating Earth Day by sponsoring the first carbon-neutral game in the history” of MLB for tonight’s contest against the Baltimore Orioles at Safeco Field. In a partnership with Cedar Grove Composting, “the energy consumption of the game will be offset through financial investment in energy-conservation projects.”

The team “is purchasing carbon offsets from Vermont-based NativeEnergy and 58,000 kilowatt-hours of ‘green power’ credits from Seattle City Light’s Green Up program.” Mariners spokesperson Rebecca Hale said that “the estimated total cost is $3,700” (Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 4/22).
