In 2007, Diamondbacks Paced Phoenix Teams in Giving

The Arizona Diamonbacks’ community spirit runs deep in Phoenix, and then, bytes on Cal Ripken Jr. and the Jackie Robinson Foundation.

Arizona Diamondbacks

Arizona Diamondbacks: In Phoenix, Craig Harris reported that in 2007, the most recent record available, the Arizona Diamondbacks “gave away $2.8 million in cash and non-cash contributions.” The Phoenix Suns, Phoenix Coyotes and Arizona Cardinals “combined to give away $2.17 million, with the Suns giving more than half of that.”

Meanwhile, Arizona Diamondbacks CEO Derrick Hall “donates all the fees he receives from appearances booked through” the Phoenix Speakers Bureau. PSB President Heidi Ream: “We have many of our speakers who will do things for charity, but no one donates 100 percent back to the community. … By the end of the year, tens of thousands of dollars will go to charity and that is the way he wants to do it. A big part of the Diamondbacks and Derrick is giving back to the community, and he is walking the talk” (Craig Harris, Arizona Republic, 3/10).

Jackie Robinson: The Jackie Robinson Foundation is holding its 2009 Annual Awards Dinner on March 16th in New York. The iconic event pays tribute to individuals who embody the humanitarian ideals of Jackie Robinson. This years honorees include Good Morning America co-host Robin Roberts, Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at John Hopkins University, Dr. Benjamin Carson, Sr., and actor Sundance Film Festival Founder and actor Robert Redford (Jackie Robinson Foundation).
